What Nurses Taught Me in the NICU (That I Still Use Today)

When your baby is in the NICU, the world feels upside down. You quickly realize that your child’s care is in the hands of experts and among the most incredible of those experts are the NICU nurses. What begins as fear and uncertainty often becomes deep trust, and over time, many parents find themselves not just leaning on nurses for support, but learning from them in ways they carry for life.

This blog is a reflection on the life lessons NICU nurses share many without even knowing it. Their blend of compassion, skill, and calm under pressure doesn’t just help your baby thrive; it helps you grow as a parent. Whether you’re still in the NICU or months out, these nurse-taught insights might feel familiar or help you look at your own journey in a new light.

The First Thing They Taught Me: How to Breathe

In the NICU, even breathing feels hard. I remember standing frozen the first time I approached my baby’s isolette. The beeping machines, the wires, the uncertainty it was overwhelming. But a nurse placed her hand gently on my shoulder and said, “Breathe. You’re here. That’s what matters.”

It sounds so simple, but it was everything. In that moment, I realized I had been holding my breath not just physically, but emotionally too. That nurse gave me permission to exhale, to be present, and to start showing up for my child, one breath at a time.

Lesson: When life feels chaotic, return to your breath. It grounds you and your baby can feel it too.

They Showed Me That Small Is Still Strong

NICU babies might be tiny, but they are mighty. One nurse told me, “These babies are some of the strongest humans I know.” She wasn’t just talking about physical strength, she meant resilience, willpower, and the way they fight for every milestone, no matter how small.

Watching the nurses celebrate half an ounce of weight gain or a quiet moment of steady breathing taught me to reframe progress. What the outside world might not notice, NICU parents and nurses recognize as massive wins.

Lesson: Strength doesn’t always look loud. Celebrate the quiet victories, they matter more than most people realize.

They Let Me Learn, Without Judgment

NICU nurses become your teachers without ever making you feel like a student. Changing a diaper through incubator portholes? Terrifying. Trying to navigate wires while dressing your baby? Even scarier. But every step of the way, the nurses guided me with encouragement, not criticism. They knew this wasn’t just about technique, it was about confidence.

They said things like:

  • “It’s okay, you’re learning.”

  • “She knows you’re her mom. That’s enough.”

  • “Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.”

Their grace gave me the courage to keep trying, even when my hands were shaking.

Lesson: You don’t have to be perfect to be a good parent. Being willing to try and try again, is enough.

They Balanced Medical Expertise with Human Compassion

One of the most unforgettable lessons I learned was how to blend knowledge with empathy. NICU nurses manage feeding tubes, oxygen levels, temperature drops, and emergency alarms all while whispering lullabies, learning baby nicknames, and making space for anxious parents to cry.

That balance between clinical precision and deep compassion is something I now strive for daily as a mom. It reminded me that being a caregiver is both a science and an art.

Lesson: It’s possible to be informed and nurturing. Being emotionally present doesn’t mean you’re less capable, it means you’re more connected.

They Taught Me the Power of Routine

Consistency is a NICU staple and for good reason. Nurses live by schedules for feeds, temperature checks, vitals, and more. But it wasn’t until I started recognizing the effects of those routines on my babies that I saw their full value. The predictability helped regulate my girls’ sleep, improved their feeding responses, and created an environment of calm amidst the chaos.

When we came home, I carried that structure with me. Not rigid rules, but soft rhythms that brought safety to our new world.

Lesson: Babies thrive in rhythm. Predictable patterns can bring peace, even in unpredictable seasons.

They Never Underestimated My Role, Even When I Did

NICU nurses never made me feel like I was "just the parent." Even when I couldn’t do everything, they reminded me of the one thing I could do better than anyone else: be their mom. They encouraged me to talk, to touch, to sing, to show up. I wasn’t an observer, I was part of the team.

That validation mattered more than they probably realized. In a setting where medical professionals seem to know everything, NICU nurses still make space for you to know your baby best.

Lesson: Your presence is powerful. You are not an outsider in your baby’s care you’re essential.

Real Advice I Still Use Today

Here are just a few of the things I learned from NICU nurses that I still use at home, sometimes daily:

  • Watch your baby, not the clock: Feeding times are important, but cues matter more.

  • Less is more: Don’t overstimulate; babies, especially preemies, thrive in calm.

  • Trust your instincts: If something feels off, speak up. You know your child best.

  • Recovery isn’t linear: Progress may stall, regress, or accelerate—and that’s okay.

  • Celebrate out loud: Clap for the tiniest milestones. Your baby hears your joy

The Heart Behind the Care

NICU nurses aren't just trained professionals, they're emotional lifelines. They hold your hand when you can’t hold your baby. They explain things a dozen times without ever sounding annoyed. They mark your child’s firsts in handmade journals. They cry with you and for you.

And when you finally go home, they’re part of the reason you can walk out stronger than when you walked in.

If you’re still in the NICU or fresh on the other side, take a moment to recognize the incredible nurses who helped carry you through. And as you dress your baby each day, remember: the smallest moments are often the most powerful. At Vincent Faith, we design with those moments in mind, clothes that let you participate, connect, and celebrate every step.
